Finding Similarities

October 4, 2015
Jessica Sweeney

Last weekend I attended the three day music festival, Boston Calling, a biennial event held at Boston’s City Hall Plaza. A highlight of this festival was the relatively unknown Doomtree set. I would like to use this space to liken this unexpected experience with that of the Cloud Construct experience.

The Doomtree group is made up of six people; each with a distinguishable sound and style. Although we are slightly larger, we have a solid core of 6 facets as well; Engineering, Web Development, Design, User Experience, Project Management and Finance.  Each of our team members has standout talent delivered with quality. The individual traits (of both groups) all work together well to form a cohesive end product, what’s that saying, the sum is greater than the parts. As individuals in the band have standalone talent, and even tour as solo acts on occasion, they are better as a team and have more recognition as a group.

The crowd grew as the set wore on; there was crowd interaction which entertained the crowd of mostly college aged indie music loving hipsters; at one time even calling us out to pretend like we’ve been to a rap concert before. At Cloud Construct, we also thrive on close interaction with our clients – interaction and open dialogue is an easy way to keep you in the memory bank of your client. We have consistent open communication lines and regular meetings, in person, video chat, conference calls – whatever works for the client. There is complete transparency and support available. Clients can come to us knowing absolutely nothing about the makings of the internet, and we work with them through all steps of their website, even starting with logo design and marketing brochures. Like Doomtree, we aim to please – all work goes through client approval steps. The crowd pleasing part of Cloud Construct is our visual design team. Our award winning designer has never let a client down with imagery or design schemes. Everyone likes something that looks good.

Like a concert experience, online user experience is so important and in both, unfortunately is oft times overlooked. A great experience includes so much more than the music - the stage, the sound, the seating, the food, the weather, the crowd, etc. Proper UX design can do so much for the overall experience and pleasure that the user feels, without even knowing it. Boston Calling is great with the “experience” of the festival, unlike other weekend long festivals, it is downtown, and there is not long drive or camping. There are games and activities, local delicious food trucks, free snacks and sunglasses, ample space, a well done mobile app. All of these things add up to make up the non-musical experience. Doomtree’s experience included the humor, the excitement, the dancing and bouncing around on stage, the deep beats and the mix up of vocalists. The good time could have been completely opposite, say, if, the stage set up was facing more to the south causing the echo to bounce off the buildings or the bathroom lines backed up into the crowd or the beer garden kept you from getting close to the stage. These are all items that you aren’t thinking about, unless something is wrong. UX takes care of any unpleasurable memories before they are presented to the viewer.

Doomtree began as a group of friends who learned how to make a business out of their talents – like Cloud Construct, who began with a small group of friends and coworkers in 2008; and has grown into full time gigs, still enjoying each other’s work, ethics, and company. Both Doomtree and Cloud Construct are growing in popularity, both in their hometowns as well as nationally through word of mouth and martketing. The future looks bright – Cloud has some big name projects in their pipeline and Doomtree is busy touring - playing as far as Australia.
